Xiangxi UNESCO Global Geopark adds one international sister park

Sep Fri 2024
In order to strengthen international exchanges, Xiangxi UNESCO Global Geopark and Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark in Malaysia recently signed an agreement to become sister parks. It is also another international sister park, following Thailand’s Satun UNESCO Global Geopark, Africa’s UNESCO M’’Goun Global Geopark, and Ngorongoro Lengai UNESCO Global Geopark.

Under the joint witness of Liu Dongsheng, vice governor of Xiangxi, and Azmir Munif Mohammed Buhar, head of the Tourism Department of the Langkawi Development Bureau, representatives of the two parks signed an agreement and exchanged promotional brochures.

At the signing ceremony, representatives of both sides introduced the profile and future expectations of the parks, and said that they would take the opportunity of establishing a tie of sister parks to further deepen cooperation in geological heritage protection, science popularization and research, talent cultivation, tourism development, and other aspects.

Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark is the first global geopark in Malaysia and even Southeast Asia. It was officially approved as a UNESCO global geopark by the UNESCO Executive Board in 2007. The park is renowned for its beautiful island scenery, unique geological landscapes, lush forests, spectacular waterfalls, and a wide variety of wild animals and plants. The 9th Asia Pacific Geoparks Network Symposium will be held in the park in 2026.
